In the early 00s, MLS was still young. MetroStars tried to establish themselves as New York's football team, but titles eluded them. It was a club constantly searching for an identity.
Players like Clint Mathis and later Tim Howard wore the red and black colors. It was the era before global branding – before multi-club ownership and the Red Bull rebrand in 2006.
The design is classic early MLS: strong colors, prominent front logo, and no discreet minimalism. It's American football aesthetics before it was polished.
