On May 13, 2012, the clock showed 93 minutes and 20 seconds when Sergio Agüero received the ball in Queens Park Rangers' box. A few seconds later, the Etihad Stadium erupted, commentator Martin Tyler shouted his famous "Agüerooooo!", and Manchester City won their first English championship in 44 years. The 2011-12 season became the turning point in Manchester City's history. Roberto Mancini's team finished on equal points with local rivals Manchester United but won the Premier League on goal difference – the closest finish in the league's history.

It was also the first season with Etihad Airways as the main sponsor. The sponsorship marked the beginning of a new identity, where Manchester City transformed from a challenger to a global football powerhouse. The light blue Umbro shirt therefore became the symbol of the start of the club's most successful period ever.

Much of the attention focused on Sergio Agüero, David Silva, Yaya Touré, Vincent Kompany, and Joe Hart, but the championship was built by an unusually broad team. Kompany's decisive header against Manchester United in April and Touré's dominance in midfield were just as crucial as Agüero's famous goal in the final matchday.
