In 2003-04, it started with exactly the right opponent. 1. FC Köln came to Bökelberg on the first matchday, and Gladbach won the derby 1-0. The rest became more difficult. Ewald Lienen left already in September, Holger Fach took over, and a team including Arie van Lent, Václav Svěrkoš, Joonas Kolkka, and future sporting director Max Eberl once again had to fight at the wrong end of the Bundesliga table.
The jersey also accompanied Borussia through a historic transition. 2003-04 was the last full season at Bökelberg, the stadium that had been the club's home since 1919 and the setting for their golden age in the 1970s. In the summer of 2004, Borussia moved to the new Borussia-Park – same white Lotto design, but a completely new setting.
2004-05 was turbulent. Holger Fach, Dick Advocaat, and Horst Köppel all managed the team. At the same time, both established names and future Gladbach stars emerged: Oliver Neuville, Christian Ziege, and Giovane Élber were in the squad, while young Marcell Jansen and Eugen Polanski represented the next generation. Borussia finished 15th, securing another season in the Bundesliga.
Thus, this football shirt marks a special point in Gladbach's history: it was worn on both sides of the move from the old Bökelberg to Borussia-Park.
