Euro 2020 was played a year late, but Denmark's tournament will always be linked to June 12, 2021. Christian Eriksen's collapse against Finland in Parken transformed a football match into something much greater in just a few minutes. Denmark lost both that match and the next one against Belgium, and stood with zero points before the decisive group match.

Against Russia, the redemption came. Mikkel Damsgaard opened the scoring, Yussuf Poulsen followed, and Christensen's long-range shot became one of the images that still stick from that summer. The 4-1 victory sent Denmark through as second in the group despite only three points.

After that, the story grew. Kasper Dolberg scored twice as Wales were beaten 4-0 in Amsterdam. In Baku, Thomas Delaney headed Denmark into the lead against the Czech Republic, Dolberg made it 2-0, and a 2-1 victory sent the national team to its first European Championship semi-final since the triumph in 1992.

At Wembley, Damsgaard gave Denmark the lead against England with a free-kick, but the fairy tale ended after extra time with a 1-2 loss. What remained was a Danish team with Schmeichel, Kjær, Christensen, Højbjerg, Mæhle, Delaney, Damsgaard, and Dolberg – and a summer where the national team once again united Denmark around football.
