It was almost designed not to be seen. At the World Cup in Qatar, Hummel muted both its own logo and the DBU badge in red. The Danish national team thus played in one of the most talked-about shirts of the tournament – not because of a wild design, but because the design became part of the debate about the World Cup itself.

Hummel drew its design language from 1992. The tonal pattern, the chevrons, and the references to the European Championship triumph were a reminder of the Danish team that seized an opportunity no one had expected. But in Qatar, “something bigger” took on a different meaning. Hummel deliberately chose to make the logos almost invisible as a statement regarding the host country and the conditions for migrant workers. Thus, a Danish national team shirt became part of the story surrounding one of modern football's most controversial World Cups.

On the pitch, the memories were far less joyful. Denmark came to the World Cup after reaching the semi-finals at Euro 2021, but drew 0-0 against Tunisia, lost 1-2 to France, and finished with a 0-1 defeat to Australia. One point and one goal sent Denmark home after the group stage.

This makes the 2022 shirt a somewhat strange Danish football memory: a football shirt that told a bigger story off the pitch than the team wearing it managed to create on it.
