Euro 1988 was the last major tournament under Sepp Piontek. Denmark met Spain, West Germany, and Italy and lost all three matches. It was a far cry from the summer in Mexico two years earlier, but the squad list still resembled a piece of Danish football history: Morten Olsen, Søren Lerby, Michael Laudrup, and Preben Elkjær.

The number 10 belonged to Elkjær. At the European Championship, he was 30 years old and played for Hellas Verona, where he had already written himself into Italian football history as a decisive profile on the team that sensationally won Serie A in 1985. For the national team, he was the man from the 1986 World Cup, who had scored a hat-trick against Uruguay and played with a fearlessness that perfectly suited the Danish Dynamite team.

The 1988 jersey also became one of Hummel's characteristic Danish designs. The wide white bands, dark contrast lines, and the geometric pattern in the fabric placed it firmly in the football aesthetic of the 80s.
