In Russia, Denmark started with a 1-0 win over Peru with Yussuf Poulsen's goal. Christian Eriksen scored in the 1-1 draw against Australia, and a 0-0 draw against the eventual world champions France sent the Danes undefeated from the group stage.

The Round of 16 match against Croatia became one of those evenings when all of Denmark once again sat in front of their screens. Mathias "Zanka" Jørgensen scored in the very first minute, Mario Mandžukić equalized shortly after, and Kasper Schmeichel saved Luka Modrić's penalty in extra time.
