Denmark opened the World Cup with a 0-0 draw against Tunisia. Then came France, where Andreas Christensen equalized before Kylian Mbappé sealed the 2-1 victory. Everything could still be salvaged against Australia, but a 0-1 defeat sent Denmark home last in the group with one point and one goal.

For Simon Kjær, the tournament was another chapter as captain of the national team he had represented since 2009. Number 4 had been at the heart of the team's strong Euro 2021 and had become a symbol of unity around the national team.
