Denmark arrived at the 1986 World Cup as tournament debutants and played their way directly into Danish football history. Preben Elkjær, Michael Laudrup, Frank Arnesen, and the rest of Sepp Piontek's team won all three group matches – including 6-1 against Uruguay and 2-0 against West Germany.

The jersey from that summer became almost as famous as the team. Hummel's asymmetric red and white design radically broke with the traditional national team jerseys of the time and subsequently became a visual symbol of Danish Dynamite. Hummel and DBU have repeatedly revisited the 1986 design; for example, Hummel describes their official 2023 DBU knitwear as directly inspired by the 1986 national team jersey.
