When Liverpool left Old Trafford with a 1-0 victory in April 2004, it was Danny Murphy who once again became Manchester United's tormentor. The penalty kick was the only goal of the match – and Liverpool played in the white Reebok shirt with Carlsberg across the chest.

2003-04 was Gérard Houllier's last season at Anfield. Liverpool had Steven Gerrard on his way to becoming the undisputed leader of the team, while Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, John Arne Riise, Milan Baroš, and new signing Harry Kewell still made the team sheet unmistakably early 00s Liverpool. The white away shirt was only used for this one season.
Results fluctuated. Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League, but a full 30 points behind Arsenal's undefeated champions. In the UEFA Cup, Marseille ended their adventure in the fourth round, while Portsmouth knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup. This marked the end of Houllier's six years as manager and the prelude to Rafael Benítez – and thus to Istanbul the following year.
The shirt therefore belongs right on the cusp between two Liverpool eras. Gerrard was already captain, Owen was on his way to Real Madrid, and Benítez would change the club's history just a few months later.
