Liverpool opened the season with a warning of what Klopp was building. At the Emirates, Arsenal were beaten 4-3 after a seven-goal thriller, Philippe Coutinho scored twice, and new signing Sadio Mané marked his league debut with a goal.

Mané became a crucial addition to an attack where Roberto Firmino and Coutinho could already combine their way through opponents. Liverpool scored 78 Premier League goals – only Tottenham and Chelsea scored more – and finished fourth with 76 points.

The decisive moment came on the final day of the season. Liverpool had to beat Middlesbrough at Anfield to secure their Champions League spot. Georginio Wijnaldum eased the nerves just before half-time, Coutinho and Adam Lallana followed suit, and the 3-0 victory sent the club back into Europe's most prestigious tournament.
