Moss arrived in New England in 2007 after two frustrating years with the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots gave up only a fourth-round pick for him. Number 81 became available shortly before the season, and Moss took the number that would soon become inextricably linked with Tom Brady's deep throws.

It became almost absurdly effective. Brady threw 50 touchdowns, and 23 of them went to Moss – at that time an NFL record for receiving touchdowns in a single season. The Patriots won all 16 regular-season games, and the Brady-Moss combination became the symbol of an offense that seemed capable of scoring at will.

But it's the defeat that completes the story. New England entered Super Bowl XLII with the opportunity for the first perfect 19-0 season. The New York Giants won 17-14 after David Tyree's famous "Helmet Catch." The Patriots went from potential immortality to perhaps the NFL's most famous almost-season.
