FOOTBALL MEMORIES

Parma's return was almost absurdly fast. The bankruptcy in 2015 sent the former UEFA Cup winner down to Serie D, but three consecutive promotions brought the club back to Serie A already in 2018. In 2019-20, Roberto D'Aversa's team was therefore only in its second season back among the elite.

The season's big story was Dejan Kulusevski. The 19-year-old Swede was on loan from Atalanta but immediately established himself as one of Serie A's most interesting young talents. He finished the league season with 10 goals and 8 assists, and Juventus secured him during the season.

Around him was a strangely fascinating Parma team. Gervinho still had the acceleration from his Arsenal and Roma years, Bruno Alves was the seasoned leader, and Matteo Darmian had returned home to Italy after Manchester United. Parma finished 11th – far from the club's European heyday, but also very far from Serie D.

The black cross on a white background was also a deliberate nod to the club's history. Erreà itself described the 2019-20 design as a continuation of Parma's traditional crociata identity, complete with the phoenix on the neck – an almost too fitting symbol for a club that had been declared bankrupt a few years earlier and had to start over.
