Donovan was only 22 in 2004 but had already experienced the breakthrough that changed American national team football. At the 2002 World Cup, he scored against Poland and Mexico, while the USA reached the quarter-finals and was only stopped 1-0 by Germany. Four years later, he was to lead the Americans to another World Cup.

2004 was one of the years where the foundation was laid. The USA lost only one of 15 international matches, and Donovan, along with others such as DaMarcus Beasley, was a central part of the team moving towards qualification for the 2006 World Cup.

The shirt also belongs to a very recognizable Nike period. The Total 90 design came with curved panels, contrast colors, and enormous numbers, which made the national team shirts of the 00s almost impossible to confuse with anything else. Nike has now brought this design back from the archive as an official tribute to Donovan.
