Valencia football shirt 2007-08 – Joaquín #17

The league was chaotic. The cup tournament was the salvation. On April 16, 2008, Valencia faced Getafe at Vicente Calderón with the chance to save a season where the club had otherwise ended up in the midst of sporting turmoil. 90 minutes later, the score was 3-1, and Valencia had won the Copa del Rey.

Valencia's 2007-08 season was strange enough to almost require a trophy to be understood. Ronald Koeman took over the team, profiles like Santiago Cañizares and David Albelda were sidelined, and a team with David Villa, David Silva, Juan Mata, Fernando Morientes, and Joaquín only finished tenth in La Liga. Yet, the season ended with silverware.

The final against Getafe was played at Vicente Calderón. Juan Mata made it 1-0 after a few minutes, Alexis increased the lead, and although Getafe reduced before halftime, Morientes sealed the final at 3-1. It was Valencia's seventh Copa del Rey.

It is precisely the final that this football shirt directly refers to. Above the Toyota logo, it says "FINAL COPA DE S.M. EL REY 2008" along with the cup motif. On the back is Joaquín #17 – the former Betis star who had come to Mestalla as one of Spanish football's great wingers.

And here, the wear must almost be allowed to tell its own story. The Joaquín print and number 17 have lost much of their surface, but the name, number, and final marking are still there. Not a perfectly preserved souvenir from 2008, but a very visible relic from the evening when Valencia, in the midst of a chaotic season, still lifted the cup.
